Taking performance-enhancing pills is one of the more common ways men try to solve erection problems. For example, the drug Cialis (tadalafil) is a PDE5 inhibitor, which is a potent vasodilator and erectile dysfunction (ED) drug. This means that the drug promotes blood flow into the penis, and voila, erection! So, even when a man isn’t feeling aroused, the drug can make the penis stay erect. Tadalafil is the most common daily PDE5 inhibitor but is also taken on an “as-needed” basis.
Familiar with the little blue pill? Viagra (sildenafil) is pretty common, helping men get and stay erect for sexual activity. This pill also falls in the PDE5 inhibitor class, making it similar to Cialis in its operation. Others include vardenafil (Levitra), and avanafil (Stendra).
Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra are all in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These drugs work by blocking the PDE5 enzyme. They also boost a chemical in your body called nitric oxide. This action encourages the muscles in your penis to relax. Relaxed muscles allow blood to flow freely, so you can get an erection when you’re aroused. It also helps you maintain the erection long enough to have sex.
Unlike Viagra and other PDE5 inhibitors, Cialis is approved to treat an enlarged prostate or BPH (benign prostate hypertrophy). Treating BPH helps the urine flow more freely by reducing the enlargement of the prostate.
Despite the effectiveness of these erectile dysfunction drugs, they pose some general body and sexual health problems and only provide temporary help.
Drawbacks to Using ED Pills
Relying on pills to elicit long-lasting erections can result in a terrible experience, affecting one’s health and livelihood.
Here are some of the drawbacks:
- Difficulty or delayed ejaculating
- Irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Back pain
- Heartburn
- Sudden hearing loss
- Stomach upsets
- Sudden vision loss
- Blue halos around vision or blurriness
- Flushed cheeks
- Splitting headaches
- Dizziness
- Nausea
One of the most significant drawbacks to using erectile dysfunction medications is a persistent, painful erection known as priapism. It happens when the blood that fills the penis to make it erect gets trapped and cannot flow back out again. Priapism can cause severe pain. A prolonged erection can damage the penis and could cause permanent problems in getting an erection. This is most commonly the result of taking too much of the PDE5 inhibitor or combining it with other medications or using injectable erection medications like Tri-Mix at the same time. As the television commercial states, “If you experience an erection lasting 4 hours or longer, go to the emergency room for treatment.” This is no joke!
